Selection Process and Dates

Students who apply to any undergraduate division of Washington University in St. Louis may apply for the John B. Ervin Scholars Program. This nationally pre-eminent program is intended to foster a richly diverse educational atmosphere on campus and to enhance the overall quality and diversity of the Washington University student body. The Ervin Scholars Program is open to all qualified applicants, regardless of race, who are U.S. citizens. Ervin Scholars undergo a rigorous application and selection process, detailed below.


November 1, 2017

Early Decision Applications are due. Submit an application for admission to Washington University, including a transcript. Early Decision applications have no bearing on Ervin Scholars Applications. 


January 2, 2018

Regular Decision Applications are due. 


January 5, 2018

Ervin Scholars applications are due. Submit a separate application to the John B. Ervin Scholars Program. If you wish to apply online, you must first submit your Common Application to gain access to the WUSTL Pathway. For more information on the University and Ervin Applications, visit 


March 22 - 25, 2018

The Ervin Scholars Program Selection Committee evaluates all applications and selects finalists. These finalists are invited to campus for a Finalist Weekend March 22 - 25. Washington University pays for finalists' round-trip expenses within the United States and their expenses while in St. Louis. 

During Finalist Weekend, finalists have the opportunity to visit classes, meet with current scholars, faculty and the Ervin Staff, as well as see what St. Louis has to offer Washington University Students. Finalists also interview as part of the selection process.


Decisions are made in the weeks after Finalist Weekend and scholars are notified on the committee's decisions.
