My top memory is 2008's Freshmen Retreat. I was so amazed at the strength and diversity of the class that was chosen. By the end of the retreat, I felt as if I had known everybody much longer than a weekend, and I could not wait to get to know people better.
The Ervin program provided a network of immediate friends and an extended family. Through the interviewing weekend and orientation I was able to get acquainted with my future colleagues so I didn't feel lost when I arrived to campus for the first day of class.
The program was both empowering and humbling to me and has helped me in all kinds of ways. The commitment to service has always been a bedrock principle to the program, and as the son of parents who studied under and respected Dr. Ervin I feel as if the importance of making a meaningful contribution as an individual abundantly clear to me very early on.
